What's the fuss about project management

May 2nd, 2008 |

Project management is a complex job that involves dealing with 4 traditional components: spending, schedule, duration and producing a satisfactory result. Qualified PMs also attempt to make the organization of business processes more efficient. The majority of undertakings utilize such recourses as labour, funds, and equipment to produce results and hit selected targets. To supervise projects successfully one should handle several factors. You can look through a number of such factors in the list below:

- Goal setting and assessing achievement.

- Managing risks. Take any project and you will see that it has a number of risks that should be dealt with.

- Finding labor and machinery for the project.

- Having a clear idea about the outcome you want to have on completion of the project.

- Controlling the project from the point of view of who is doing what and at what time.

- Managing quality.

- Dealing with change. Circumstances change. All tasks occur in time, so the element of change should be properly considered.

- Exchanging information with project stakeholders.

Regular methods of managing projects, such a pencil and a notepad, can be employed to manage the majority of of these things. However, specialized project tracking software has a number of relevant benefits:

- Idividual jobs are easier to assign to time blocks. Duration can be adjusted automatically using the workload information. You can set work calendars for different people. Managing progress also becomes less of a problem.

- Working with several projects and handling a set of specifications. Management can use progress tracking software to facilitate analysis of several big projects.

- It helps you find the critical path. The critical path is made of tasks that directly influence the real duration of the project. Should a task on the critical path take less or more time, the whole project is going to be touched by this change. It should be noted that for activities that are not on the critical path minor changes in duration can have no effect whatsoever on the project.

- Allowing all involved be aware of what is happening. Complex projects demand a lof of information exchanges. Productivity tracking software makes distribution of data simpler than it has ever been before.

Should you every time choose task tracking software?

Project tracking software might not be appropriate in 100 percent of all cases. It delivers the greatest result when employed for several big projects. It might be more appropriate to operate smaller projects manually, so that you do not have to pay big overhead associated with using complex programs.
