Making boxshots as well as e-book covers can be a no brainer.

April 6th, 2008 |

A nice wrapping makes a good sale. If you want to successfully distribute your books or software items, wrap them up. As the product is virtual, so is the wrapping. Below you can see 3 possible ways to create a virtual cover:

- Requesting it from somebody

- Drawing it yourself in Photoshop

- Using some cool dedicated software

The first option looks pretty simple. However, excellent designers ask for big money. Every product box or e-book cover will round up to $150. Using Photoshop is fine if you know how to make the program do what you want from it. To do everything properly extra action scripts might be necessary that are not that cheap. And there is the cost of Photoshop, of course, which will cost you $700. The third option is to try and choose from the specialized boxshot software. It is good to learn that the market of such solutions is huge with the prices at $15-100. There is obviously plenty room for choice. If we group these offerings, we will be left with three types:

Ready made templates that give no freedom

3D with polygonal rendering

3D with ray tracing

Going with the first choice, you ensure that 3d box and e-book covers will be fine, but there will surely be certain limitations. You will not be able to rotate or scale the software box or ebook cover. The second option gives you more freedom, but the simplified model produces unnatural shadows. You will not need James Bond's glasses to see that the images look weak. The third choice does not suffer from such shortcomings. For every pixel the software calculates millions of rays, determines shadows, glitter and other fx stuff. As the result, you receive a truly realistic image. If you would like to have more options and quality, you should employ the 3rd type of box shot. A great instance of such software is Box Shot 3D. This soft costs 40 euros. It lets you create boxshots, e-book covers, covers for CD/DVD boxes, VIP cards and other cool things. See for your self some pics of ebook covers and software boxes.

It would take you quite a bit of work to deliver equal level of graphic detail in Photoshop even if you possess the necessary scripts. There are not so lots of solutions that can deliver a similar result. You will take advantage of quite a few customizable settings, for example changing the intensity of light and reflections, and optimizing many other visual elements. No boxshot or e-book cover should be developed without Box Shot 3D. Your goods will have the packaging they deserve. Attract the prospect with fancy looks. I am certain that Box Shot 3D is the optimal solution for you.
